There are a number of Chinese celebrations every year and the main one is the Chinese Lunar New Year!
Chinese New Year takes place on February the 9th in 2005 and January 29th in 2006 , but it's not always on the same date every year as it is decided by the astronomical charts and not by some historical figure from the past.
During this festival, people greet others with the words 'Kung Hei Fat Choy', which translates to 'Wishing You Prosperity and Wealth'. Often small red envelopes - Lai See Hong Bao - containing money are handed out, from bosses to workers and from seniors to juniors. Most people look forward to this aspect of the festival. The amount is usually an even number as odd numbers are regarded as unlucky. Bosses usually give more money to the people they value the most, this also coincides with the yearly bonus, often one months of salary, which is given at this very suitable time of year.
Cross border traffic from Hong Kong to China is very high at this time of year, as many Hong Kong Chinese visit their relatives on mainland China, such as Guangdong and many villages.
Lions are also considered to be good omens and as such lion dances are popular, with one dancer holding the dead and the other two controlling the body and tail. The dancing can be very energetic and requires a high level of fitness to perform with the utmost vigour.
